What is Mementa?

Mementa is a pen first notebook app for Windows 11. You write and draw by hand on real pages, collect stickers and photos, read and mark up PDFs, comics and ebooks on the same shelf, and turn any notebook into a printed book shipped to your door. See everything Mementa does.

Who is Mementa for?

Is Mementa a note taking app or a journaling app?

Both. It is a notebook with real pages, so it works for class notes and meeting notes as well as journals, planners and scrapbooks. See the toolkit.

Who makes Mementa?

Does Mementa use AI?

Mementa has no generative AI and sends nothing to a cloud service to be read. Handwriting recognition uses the recognizer built into Windows, on your own PC, and sticker peeling is ordinary image processing. See handwriting to text.

How much does Mementa cost?

$4.99 through the Microsoft Store, paid once. You own it, every update included, and there is no subscription. If you acquired Mementa before the paid launch, you already own it and will never be asked to pay. See buy once.

Is there a subscription?

No. There is no subscription and there never will be one. Every update is included in the one payment.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The Microsoft Store offers a 7 day free trial. Your notebooks are saved on your own PC the whole time.

Where do I get Mementa?

From the Microsoft Store. There is no installer download on this website.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for the app follow the Microsoft Store's refund policy, because Microsoft processes the purchase.

Are printed books included in the price?

No. Printed books are ordered separately, one at a time, and you see the exact price before you pay. See bookmaking.

What do I need to run Mementa?

A Windows 11 PC, either ARM64 or x64 (Intel or AMD). A pen or a touchscreen is lovely to have, but a mouse works too.

Does Mementa work on Windows 10?

No. Mementa runs on Windows 11 only.

Does Mementa run on Snapdragon and ARM PCs?

Yes. Mementa runs natively on ARM64, so it does not run through emulation on a Snapdragon PC. It runs natively on Intel and AMD too.

Does Mementa work with the Surface Pen and Slim Pen?

Yes. Pressure, the side button and the eraser end all work, and on a Slim Pen 2 you feel each tool change through its haptic motor. See Mementa on Surface Pro.

Does it work with other pens and 2 in 1 laptops?

Yes, with any pen Windows recognizes as a pen. What changes from pen to pen is the hardware: how finely it reports pressure, whether it has a side button and an eraser end, and whether it has a haptic motor. See side button shortcuts.

Can I use a rubber tipped stylus?

A rubber tipped stylus reads as a finger, so it moves the page instead of writing. Mementa needs a pen that Windows recognizes as a pen. See palm rejection.

Can I use Mementa with a mouse?

Yes. A left-click draws and selects, and a right-click stands in for the pen's side button. Arc, Mementa's radial pen menu, is the one tool that needs a pen.

Is there a Mac, iPad or Android version?

No. Mementa is made for Windows 11 pen tablets and 2 in 1 laptops.

Does Mementa work offline?

Yes. Everything works without an internet connection except ordering a printed book. See local first storage.

Can I rest my hand on the screen while I write?

Yes. The pen writes, a finger moves the page, and a resting palm leaves no mark and does not drag the page. See palm rejection.

Can Mementa turn my handwriting into text?

Yes, right on the page. Lasso your writing and hold the pen still, or write beside a text box and your words flow in as typed text. Recognition runs on your device, and one undo puts your handwriting back. See handwriting to text.

Can I search my handwritten notes?

Yes. Mementa reads your handwriting in the background on your own PC, so search finds a word you wrote by hand in any notebook, without converting it. See handwriting search.

Which languages can handwriting recognition read?

Recognition follows the language you set in the app, and is built and checked for English, Spanish, German and French. Hindi handwriting is not promised.

Does Mementa have pages, or an endless canvas?

Real pages, in a real book shape. Write past the end of a page and the next one appears. See page shapes.

Can I use Mementa as a digital planner or bullet journal?

Yes. Start from dot grid, ruled, blank or legal pad paper, or put a planner PDF or image you already have behind one page or the whole notebook, then write on top by hand. Links inside a planner PDF are not followed. See digital planners.

Can I type as well as write?

Yes. Add text boxes anywhere, in any font on your PC, and turn them to any angle. See text boxes.

Can I record audio with my notes?

No. Mementa does not record audio.

Can I move or resize my handwriting?

Yes. Lasso it with the Knife and move, resize, rotate, copy or delete it. See the Knife.

Is there undo?

Yes. Undo and redo cover drawing, erasing, moving, object edits, backgrounds and layer changes.

Does Mementa come with stickers?

No. You bring your own: packs you own, packs you buy from artists, stickers you draw yourself, and pieces you cut from your own photos. See the Sticker Book.

Can I use digital sticker packs I bought?

Yes, if they come as images (PNG or JPG), SVG or PDF, which is how most packs are sold. Drop a sheet in and Mementa separates the stickers for you. See sticker peeling.

How do I add photos to a page?

Open the sticker drawer in a notebook, tap the add tile and pick photos from your PC, or copy an image in another app and paste it onto the page. Double-tap a photo to crop it. See non destructive crop.

Can I cut a person or object out of a photo?

Yes. Draw a loop around it with the Knife and it comes away as its own sticker, cut on your line. See cutting photos.

Can I make a photo book or a scrapbook?

Yes. Add photos, peel sticker packs into reusable pieces, and write around them by hand. Square pages suit photos best, and the finished notebook can be printed and shipped to you. See digital scrapbooking.

What files can Mementa open?

PDF documents, CBZ and CBR comics, EPUB ebooks, images, and portable Mementa .notebook files. See the reader.

Can I write on a PDF?

Yes. Open the PDF from your shelf and tap the pencil. Choose a book shape and it becomes a notebook you can write on, while your original file stays untouched. See the reader.

Can I highlight PDFs and ebooks?

Yes, right in the reader, in translucent ink you can read through. Flip the pen over to rub a highlight off. See reading highlights.

Can Mementa read Kindle books or DRM protected ebooks?

No. Mementa opens EPUB files without copy protection. See the EPUB reader.

Can I order a printed book, and what does it cost?

Yes. Mementa prints any notebook on demand and delivers to 215 countries. Pick from eight sizes, hardcover or softcover, a matte or gloss cover, standard or premium paper, and black and white or color pages. Shipping is included in the price, which starts at $20 for a softcover and $34 for a hardcover in the US. Longer books, larger sizes and some destinations cost more, and tax and any import duties are added at checkout. See bookmaking.

Can I order just one copy?

Yes. There is no minimum order, and you can order more copies later whenever you like.

Who prints the books?

Lulu, a print on demand partner, prints and ships every book. See printed books.

Which countries do you ship to?

215 countries, priced in your own currency where it is supported. See shipping.

How long does delivery take?

It depends on where the book is going. You get a tracking email once it ships.

What if my notebook is short?

A printed softcover needs at least 32 pages and a hardcover 24. Blank pages are added at the end of the print file to reach the minimum, and your notebook is not changed.

Can I design my own cover?

Yes. The cover designer lays out the front, spine and back at the real size, with your own art and a title in one of five typefaces, and checks every face before you pay. See the cover designer.

Can I turn my kids' drawings into a book?

Yes. Photograph the art, lay it out in a Square notebook, add names and dates, and order a copy. See kids' art books.

Where are my notebooks stored?

On your own PC, not on our servers, in a folder called Mementa inside your Windows user folder. Settings shows it under Notebook folder. See local first storage.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account for the notebook. Microsoft keeps your purchase with your Microsoft account through the Store.

Does Mementa sync between devices?

No. Your library stays on your PC. To move a notebook to another PC, export it as one portable .notebook file. See portable notebooks.

What happens to my notebooks if I uninstall?

Nothing. They stay in the Mementa folder, and reinstalling picks them up again.

How do I back up my notebooks?

Your whole library, notebooks and Sticker Book included, is one folder. Copy it to an external drive or back it up with the tool you already use.

What can I export?

PDF, PNG, JPG, CBZ and fixed layout EPUB, for the whole notebook, one page or a range, plus transparent PNG for ink only. See export.

Does Mementa collect my data?

The app does not collect your content, and there is no analytics or usage telemetry. If it crashes, it asks before sending a report, and crash reports never include your notebooks or files. See a private journal app and the privacy policy.

What if I delete a notebook by mistake?

Deleted notebooks go to a recycle bin where you can restore them, and older versions open as safe copies. See auto save and the recycle bin.

Which languages is Mementa in?

English, Spanish, German, French, Dutch and Hindi. The language switches live with no restart. See languages.

Is there a tutorial?

Yes. A quick start tutorial comes with the app, and you can download it as a PDF.
